The Mathematics Department at King Edward’s aims to develop an interest, enthusiasm and solid maths knowledge to ensure all pupils are equipped to manage every day life and further education. We enhance learning through a variety of enrichment activities, including weekly problem-solving competitions (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) and regular involvement in Mathematics Challenges and Olympiads.
1st Form to GCSE
Maths is a core subject from 1st Form to Year 11 at IGCSE. Pupils are set according to ability – from 1st Form.
Most pupils sit the IGCSE Mathematics
For the few where mathematics is a challenge there is IGCSE foundation tier the aim is to ensure that pupils are prepared for the qualification which accords to their ability in Mathematics but offers choice for further education.
Additional Maths alongside the IGCSE is beneficial if choosing this route.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) and A-level Mathematics are offered at King Edward’s
IB Maths is either Maths Analysis & Approaches or Maths Applications & Interpretations arranged in two tiers - Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). The choice is determined by pupil ability and mathematical requirements for university study.
A-level Mathematics is the new A-level curriculum encompassing Pure Mechanics and Statistics. Pupils must obtain a minimum IGCSE Grade 7 Maths at A-level
A-level Further Maths
We encourage our most promising mathematicians to take Further Maths at A-level, giving them a solid base from which to pursue higher study.
The Department offers support for Advanced Extension Award (AEA) and Oxbridge applications including Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) course.
