Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge is central to our educational philosophy.

The Theory of Knowledge course is a compulsory element of the IB Diploma which we also offer to those A-level pupils taking three      A-Levels. It is supported by a lecture series for the entire Lower Sixth which runs every other week. The TOK course invites pupils to consider their own position in relation to key issues, whether environmental, social, economic, global, or even temporal.  The course engages all pupils in discovering more about the world and inspiring them to rise to the challenges we face. It encourages pupils to become conscious of themselves as thinkers, to become aware of the complexity and intricacy of knowledge, and to recognise and appreciate the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world.

It is often considered by universities to be one of the most important aspects of the IB Diploma course, such is its impact on undergraduates’ ability to cope with study at higher education level. For pupils taking the course in 2019, it is assessed with a presentation and an essay. In 2020 and for the future, there is an ethical project which is assessed with a formal written report. At     King Edward’s therefore, we offer the course to all members of the Sixth Form, irrespective of whether they are doing A-levels or IB.  Successful completion of the Theory of Knowledge course is rewarded with UCAS points if taken as a discrete subject.
