For anyone with a dramatic bent, there is always plenty of opportunity to take part in a drama production at King Edward's
cast

Drama at King Edward’s is a very popular and fully subscribed curriculum area. It is also a source of enrichment and learning across the curriculum.

Drama is taught discretely, one lesson a week, in Forms One to Three and is available as a GCSE subject option and at IB Diploma level. The Drama Department also offers individual and small group private drama lessons for those wishing to pursue LAMDA diploma examinations.

The School has a strong track record of placing pupils on highly competitive courses at universities such as Exeter and drama schools such as The Guildhall, and pupils are given every opportunity and encouragement to pursue their passion for this subject to the highest level.

Activities include theatre visits to London, Stratford upon Avon, Guildford and Woking. The School also has strong links with professional companies which provide workshops with practitioners such as ‘Frantic Assembly’, the ‘Actors of Dionysus’ and the Royal National Theatre.

There is a busy programme of extra-curricular and enrichment performances which are open to all students. In each year there is a Lower School play, with past productions including Our Day Out , Oliver, Bugsy Malone and Alice in Wonderland; there is a whole school play, which in 2010 was Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Part One, and a summer term Sixth Form play. Recent productions include A Trip to Scarborough, Confusions and The Real Inspector Hound.

Exam Drama performances are also showcased to external audiences at GCSE and higher levels, as this gives a genuine experience to pupils of interaction with a live audience.

Each year there is an inter-house drama competition which is organised, directed and performed entirely by pupils. This provides a great opportunity for Senior pupils to get to know each other and bond in house groups as well as have a lot of fun together in a performance experience.

Recent upgrades to the facilities and backstage technical capacity of Charter Hall have led to wider opportunities for pupils to become involved in the use of digital technology to control lighting, sound and to film, record and edit performances, as well as create projection effects and programme the effects for shows and performances.
