Overseas Pupil Profiles
A vibrant international community

What do our overseas students feel about King Edward's?
Melis
Although very well travelled, when Melis joined King Edward's it was her first time away from her family, who live in Istanbul. Melis and her parents chose King Edward’s because of its high position in the list of Top IB Schools in the country, and were equally impressed by the inviting atmosphere, medical centre and personal feel.
Although she was very nervous when she started, Melis was reassured by the welcome she received from the house staff and the big cultural mix, with many other pupils experiencing the same feelings. Studying the IB introduced her to new subjects, and with a passion for Philosophy, her excellent results in her IB Diploma has ensured she is able to study Philosophy and Psychology at her university of choice. She will particularly remember King Edward’s for its family atmosphere where the relationship between staff and pupils is relaxed and easy, and where the focus is on developing all aspects of personality.
Victor
Before joining King Edward's, Victor looked at four schools but chose here because it looked so interesting and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. He was nervous when he arrived, but joining in the many activities meant he soon felt part of the community. He plays for the 1st XI Football and Hockey teams, won the award for most improved player in Cricket, took lead roles in the main School play, Sixth Form play and House drama production, and also found time to be a Prefect and Deputy Head of House.
IB is the ideal course for Victor who would like to study Law at university, but doesn’t yet know whether to continue his education at King’s College London, or return to Germany. He would like to become a judge, like his grandfather, godfather and uncle before him. Victor is also grateful for the support and encouragement he has received at the School from both teachers and friends and not just for academic issues. The cultural mix at King Edward’s has widened his view of the world, and opened up many new paths, including a new love of Cricket. It has been very easy to become involved, find friends and be part of the King Edward’s community. Victor's experience at King Edward's has obviously influenced his sister, Sophie's, choice because she joins us in September.
Roberta
Roberta, from Estonia, joined the school in the Sixth Form. Her decision to choose King Edward’s was largely influenced by the excellent choice of subjects, the wide cultural diversity of the community, the welcome she received at her first visit and not least the different activities and sport. Business Studies , Art, Photography and Drama were a great mix for her and she was able to fulfil her childhood ambition “Since I was 12 years old, I wanted to go to Central St Martin’s – and here I am today, studying Art and Design and loving it!”
When asked what were the strengths that King Edward’s offered she had no hesitation in saying that the different mix of cultures and community spirit was a real plus. “In a strange country, it is important that the school becomes a surrogate family. King Edward’s is a lovely community with everyone prepared to help”.
