Elizabeth wins inaugural House Cake Competition!
Marbled chocolate sponge cake wins over the judges despite stiff (and tasty!) competition.
The competition took place on the last weekend of April and was heartily entered into by many talented bakers from across the school. Every House was given a budget and free-choice of their recipe, to please those with a love for cocoa! The Food Technology building was opened especially for this occasion on Saturday and there was a fantastic, fun and creative atmosphere as the Houses came and went producing their master pieces.
The judging panel, Head Chef Mr C. Bicknell, Sous Chef Mr A. Sari, Mr A. Skau and the Headmaster, gathered on Sunday afternoon. They had detailed scoring criteria ranging from 'Consistency of Sponge' to 'Overall Impression' and their forks at the ready! Each entry was unique from the other; notable entrants were Queen’s House cake surrounded by cookies to produce a beautiful crown and Wakefield’s cake, possessing an intense chocolate flavour. The eventual winner was Elizabeth House, offering a cake that was a decorated house surrounded by delicate trees; an enormous marbled sponge cake, filled with caramel and topped with incredible icing – it was still being enjoyed by staff in the Common Room two days later! Well done to all contestants and with thanks to those staff who helped make this an enjoyable event.
