The Learner Profile is central to the philosophy of the IB Diploma Programme

At King Edward’s we have embraced the Learner Profile for all of our pupils.

We aim for all to become:TriWorldSchool2Colourlarge

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communcators
  • Principled
  • Open-Minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-Takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Theory of Knowledge
If the Learner Profile is the heart of the IB Diploma Programme, then Theory of Knowledge is its mind and soul.  In Theory of Knowledge, pupils learn about different ways and areas of knowing, and how to challenge their assumptions.  They do this in classes and discussion groups, as well as an interesting array of lectures and talks from subject specialists.  Theory of Knowledge also permeates throughout the entire IB Diploma Programme. 'TOK is really good and is what makes the IB unique.  It teaches you how to think, which is very valuable when you leave School.' Katie

Creativity, Action and Service
Creativity, Action and Service is about experiential education outside of the classroom, followed by reflection.

All IB Diploma Programme pupils, over the course of the Sixth Form, achieve the following targets:
• increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth
• experience of new challenges
• planning and initiation of activities
• collaborate work with others
• demonstration of commitment in their activities
• engagement with issues of global importance
• consideration of the ethical implications of their actions
• development of new skills
'CAS is part of being a well-rounded person; you have your subjects, but then you also have to stay active, be creative and help your community.' Isabel

The Extended Essay
is the final part of the Core, and is a focused research project that results in a 4000 word report.  Although pupils find it a challenge initially, it is an invaluable part of the IB Diploma Programme, and provides excellent preparation for university. 'The Extended Essay is another thing which sets the IB apart from A Level ... it helped me personally to clarify my choice of university course, and it also helps with university interviews to show that you've gone into depth about a particular area.'
