The Countess of Munster Music School

The Music School was a gift in 1963 by the Countess of Munster (sister of the then Treasurer, Gerald Coke). The building consists of a Recital Room, a teaching classroom, a music library (that doubles as a smaller teaching and rehearsal room), the Director of Music’s study and administration office, as well as nine practice and teaching rooms and two instrumental stores.

There are excellent pianos in all practice and teaching rooms, some containing grands, while there is an extensive stock of instruments, drum kits and orchestral percussion.

All classes in Forms One to Three receive class lessons in Music; in the First and Second forms these consist of double lessons where the course is practically based, culminating in joint termly concerts or workshops. Instrumentalists are encouraged to play in the instrumental ensemble section while others will participate in class singing.

The Third Form has one lesson a week which mainly consists of music appreciation of a wide variety of styles and genres.

In the Fourth Form pupils opt for the EdExcel GCSE course of two years, which consists of various disciplines, the main three being performing, composing and listening.  Pupils are expected to possess reasonable performing skills (around Grade 4 ABRSM), to have the requisite command of written music to enable them to compose two pieces of music, and will learn of the various types of composition or performance that go into forming the rich tapestry that is the language of Music.

Music is an option at IB.
