Entrance procedures

Welcome to King Edward’s. We hope to make your decision to join us for senior school as simple as possible.  Prospective pupils and their families are always welcome to visit the School either by attending an Open Morning or by arranging an individual visit. This will normally involve a meeting with the Head or with the Director of Admissions and taking a tour of the School with a pupil. Either option may be arranged through the Admissions Office who can be reached via admissions@kesw.org or on +44 (0)1428 686735.

Pupils normally join the School at 1st Form (aged 11), 3rd Form (aged 13) or Sixth Form (aged 16). We offer a Pre-Sixth one year GCSE programme in the 5th Form (aged 15 to 16). Entry is possible into other year groups depending on individual circumstances and availability.

A pupil must be registered to be eligible to take the School entrance examination. Families interested in admission are requested to register by returning a King Edward’s Witley application form together with a non-returnable registration fee of £150 to the Admissions Office. Cheques should be made payable to King Edward’s School Witley. Alternatively, please call our Fees Officer, Lorraine McFadden, on +44(0)1428 686794 to pay by credit card.

Entry at 11+, 12+ 13+

(1st,2nd, 3rd Forms)

Candidates who wish to enter the School in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Forms are required to sit an entrance examination at the School in the January of the year of entry. Later applicants can sit an entrance test anytime by separate arrangements. Alternative arrangements can be made for overseas applicants who are unable to travel to the School.

13+ pre-testing option via an independent prep school

Pupils entering 3rd Form are required to sit the Common Entrance tests which take place at their prep school in the June of the year of entry. You may register a child at any time following an initial enquiry. If you would like your child to be pre-tested Years 6 or 7, to be considered for a place in 3rd Form (Year 9), please contact Mr Justin Benson,  admissions@kesw.org or telephone +44 (0)1428 686735.

Both the January entrance exam and 3rd Form pre-test have four components:

  1. A verbal reasoning test – this test is not required for those for whom English is not their first language
  2. A Mathematics test based upon the relevant level of the National Curriculum
  3. An English test of comprehension and free writing
  4. An interview to assess suitability for the broad education provided by the School

For all 1st to 3rd Form applicants a report from the pupil’s current Head is required.

Pupils who have been successful in the entrance examinations will be offered places at the School, normally within two weeks of the examinations. The formal date for acceptance of an offer is the first Monday in March. However, early acceptance is advised. Acceptances that arrive after all places have been filled will be placed on a waiting list. Acceptances received outside the above time frame will lapse and there will be no guarantee of places.

Entry at 14+ and 15+

(4th Form, 5th Form)

For applicants where the medium of education is English, the assessment is completed by an interview and by a report from the Head of the applicant’s present school. It is possible for a Skype interview to be undertaken for those who are unable to travel from overseas to the School. For those whose education has been delivered mainly in a language other than English, there are entrance tests in English and Mathematics. In addition an interview may also be required. Please contact the Admissions Office, admissions@kesw.org or telephone +44 (0)1428 686735.

Pre-Sixth Form

(5th Form)

The Pre-Sixth Form course is ideal for overseas applicants or those seeking to relocate to the United Kingdom. The one-year programme prepares 15-16-year olds for the Sixth Form, both in terms of academic preparation and to get a taste of boarding.

For applicants where the medium of education is English, the assessment is completed by an interview and by a report from the Head of the applicant’s present school. It is possible to hold a Skype interview for those who are unable to travel from overseas to King Edward’s. For those whose education has been delivered mainly in a language other than English there are entrance tests in English and Mathematics. In addition, an interview may also be required.

Entry at 16+

(Sixth Form)

Acceptance into the Sixth Form is conditional upon candidates meeting the entrance requirements of the School. For those taking GCSE, IGCSE or equivalent, the expectation is for a minimum of 6 A* – C grades (equivalent to 9-4 in new grade system) including Mathematics and English. Under normal circumstances a place will be offered following an interview and the receipt of a satisfactory report from the Head  of the applicant’s present school. For those who are not following GCSE or equivalent courses, it is necessary to complete written tests in English and Mathematics and to have an interview.

The Sixth Form curriculum at King Edward’s offers a choice of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and A-level qualifications to equip our pupils with the right qualification that suits their strengths and opens the global marketplace for universities and jobs.

Overseas candidates wanting to attend the Sixth Form but that have not followed GCSE or equivalent courses must complete written tests in English and Mathematics and have an interview. Applicants can take the School’s entrance tests at an approved overseas centre or at the pupil’s present school by special arrangement.
