Competition Fuels Success

4th September 2019

Gothia Cup Selection for King Edward’s Footballers.

Four pupils from King Edward’s travelled to Gothenburg, Sweden during the summer holidays to take part in the world’s largest international youth football tournament, the Gothia Cup. This marked a major achievement for Tanvir Chahal, Sam Gray, Henry Perkins and Shem Kairuki who were all selected from 100 independent schools for teams to represent England in the event. Dan Abraham, Director of Football, commented, “To have four pupils involved in this event is a wonderful achievement. The players did well to get to the last 32 in their respective groups, but the trip was so much more than football. The players learnt a huge amount both on and off the pitch, playing and meeting teams from all over the world, from different continents and cultures but who were all united in their passion for football. Taking part in the Opening Ceremony which was attended by over 55,000 people was a memory they will treasure for the rest of their lives.”
