U15s victorious in Portsmouth

14th June 2022

Spirits were high on a blustery day, as King Edward’s Witley travelled to Hilsea Playing Fields to face Portsmouth Grammar. In what would be the final tennis match of the summer, the U15s, led by captain Pablo were excited to get going in what looked like to be a competitive fixture.

Six singles started off the afternoon, with debutant Ollie Fitch quickly winning his set 6-1. 3rd Form pupil, Mattie, whose enthusiasm throughout the Summer Term has been formidable, stood up to the mark to also win 6-2.

Our stand out performer was Pablo, who put on a fighting performance against a strong opponent. With the score level throughout, tensions were high as the other players watched on. With excellent footwork, fluent forehands and steady volleys, Pablo secured the victory winning 7-4 in the set tie-break, giving King Edward’s a 5-1 lead going into the doubles.

Again, Ollie secured a quick 6-0 win with his partner Michael, who then went to support the No.1 and No.2 seed in their doubles match.

Will and Pablo, who were given the privilege of top seeds, had a tough battle against a pair that served and volleyed excellently.  Despite some long rallies and great play on tired legs from the King Edward’s players, Portsmouth Grammar came out as victors, winning the set 6-4.

A final mention goes to Cai and Mattie who also won their set 6-4.

Overall, it was a great afternoon for all of those involved as King Edward’s left the venue victorious, having aced their final tennis match of the summer.
