Today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day - an important occasion to celebrate the freedoms fought for on our behalf and to remember the sacrifices made.

A great many schools were committed to the high service of our nation during World War II, but King Edward`s Witley perhaps paid more than most, not only through tragic loss of life but also the requisitioning of its school buildings by the Admiralty.

Renamed HMS Mercury, our school site was used as a base to develop naval radar. Some say the `Battle of the Atlantic` and other operations were won over the playing fields of Witley.

In moments of reflection, we were grateful to Christopher Hudson (OW 1958) for a commemorative flyby to honour those who served.

We were also delighted to welcome residents from Surrey Heights care centre and Surrey Hills nursing centre for an afternoon tea, joined by Chris and Margaret Ensor née Hill (OW 1959).

As a whole community, we will never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Instead of relying on his usual heavy percussion and bold orchestration, Zimmer took a more intimate and spiritual approach, building much of the score around a massive church organ, subtle strings, and ambient textures. Revision for summer exams is well under way in our vibrant lower school, Queen Mary House. We were delighted to see this fantastic piece of cross-curricular work from Rosabel in 2nd form (year 8), hand painted and a beautiful fusion of her passions for art and science.

When a pupil is given flexibility in their learning and how they present their work along with content, understanding leaps out of the page and in to life.

The recent golf tour to North Devon was a fantastic experience for our pupils, who embraced the challenge and camaraderie that sport at King Edward’s encourages.

Over the course of three days, eight pupils had the opportunity to play at @rndgolfclub - the oldest course in England – followed by rounds on both the East and the formidable West courses at Saunton Golf Club.

The weather was superb throughout, and we were warmly welcomed at each venue. It was a memorable trip that reflected the values of sportsmanship and personal growth that underpin all co-curricular experiences at KESW.
