Poetry: Change

Poem written by Monty Nelson, 3rd Form pupil

I first was filled with patriotism
Then I was filled with joy
At being able to fight for my country
But I only was a boy.

But my family never proud were they,
They begged me not to go,
Into the grey, grey wastes
They begged me not to go.

But soon I went to France
I left my family there
They would be blown to pieces
By German death from the air.

When I arrived in France
I found no glory there
Just a grey and grey and greyer waste
A void with no one there.

I’m still fighting a war
I’m only just a boy
My friends are dying around me
Without any hope or joy.
