Friday Feature: Ms Sophie Quiney

31st March 2023

What is your current position at King Edward's Witley?

Head of Biology.

How long have you worked at King Edward's Witley?

Since September 2022.

Where do you live and where were you born?

I live near Farnham and have lived in the area since I was 6. I was born in Bristol.

What's your favourite thing about working at King Edward's Witley?

I know I am meant to have 1 but I have 2…

The students make this school an amazing place to work. They are what make me want to come to work every day. I would also say my colleagues are incredible and they also make this school brilliant.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy baking and exercising in my free time during term time, they really relax me and are so enjoyable. I also love skiing and am very excited for my next ski trip.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was a child I wanted to be a doctor but as I grew older I realised I just wanted to help people. I loved Biology and found that teaching fitted my skills and personality really well. It was either that or an explorer.

What is the funniest thing a pupil has ever said to you?

I don’t know if its the funniest but its definitely the most memorable, and my student then wrote it in her year book as a memory of how Biology lessons allowed her to ask any question she wanted. The question was ‘So if leaves are green because they photosynthesise, is that the reason aliens are green? Do you think they would photosynthesise?’.

What's your favourite book/movie/song?

Favourite Book-Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Favourite Film- Notting Hill
