Occupying extensive and purpose-built laboratories, the Science Department aims to excite and fulfil curiosity in the physical world.

The Science Department aims to:

- Stimulate interest in all branches of Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) among the pupils through relevant and exciting lessons, with an emphasis on practical skills and understanding

- Deliver schemes of work linked to but beyond the National Curriculum

- Optimise exam performance of pupils of all abilities

- Encourage more pupils to continue the study of Science at university

Lower School Science:
World of Science is currently taught throughout First, Second and Third Form, but this will change to Spectrum in the summer term of 2010 for Third Form only.

GCSE: From September 2011 all Fifth Form pupils will take IGCSE in Science. The Pre-IB group follow the AQA Additional Science course. Pupils are provided with a variety of textbooks, which are specific to each discipline. In addition to this, each department also provides its own resources

Biology
Biology is a fast developing subject that is reflected with a broad based approach to modern biology. Pupils at all levels gain a broad understanding of the principles of Biology whilst having the ability to develop areas of specialist knowledge. Emphasis is placed on modern advances including genetic modification and therapeutic use of gene technology.

The School is set in 100 acres of woodland that forms the perfect setting in which to carry out environmental fieldwork. A strong emphasis is placed upon practical work and the Biology curriculum is complemented by activities that include beekeeping, conservation management, an allotment and wildlife study.

The Enrichment programme includes the University of Surrey lecture series, National Biology Olympiad for IB students, National Biology Challenge for Fourth and Fifth Form pupils, Fieldwork in the school grounds and Witley Common and Birdworld - Outreach visit for Fourth Form studying adaptations and evolution.

Chemistry
Chemistry is more than just academic. The Chemistry Department hopes to instill in our pupils the need to be aware of the impact that chemistry had, has and will have on our society in the future. We do this by introducing them to experimentation and research type questions to encourage their natural sense of enquiry.

IB
: Throughout the course the international nature of Chemistry is stressed - whether this is to do with chemists from different parts of the planet discussing and sharing their ideas relating to a common research question, or the way in which multi - national industries, whose products are invaluable to society today, affect us all. The Lower and Upper Sixth visit the University of Surrey on a regular basis for lectures and also visit the RHS at Wisley as part of the IB Group 4 project.

Physics
The general aims of the Department are to develop the essential knowledge and understanding of Physics through its applications. The development of ideas in Physics is followed from theory, through experiment, on to application with social, economic and technical considerations. To achieve this, the complimentary mathematical and practical skills are developed over the duration of the course. A wide variety of partnerships, lectures and trips inherent to the course are arranged including lectures at universities and in London, Brooklands Museum and in-house lectures.
